Voyager

In 1977, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 were launched into space. Their mission took them to the outer reaches of our solar system, and further into Interstellar space. On these spacecrafts was the Golden Record, a message to any other life in the universe. If anyone ever found it, we wanted them to know what it meant to be human.

In Spring 2023, I asked 20 dancers what they would choose to represent this same thing, but without such constraints as what can actually fit on a record. The script of this piece is constructed from their responses. It was recorded live in one take in a church in Brooklyn with myself as the narrator alongside the vocalists. Though the dancers have only seen the score in its recorded format, it originated as structured improvisation composed by Hannah Cai Sobel. Voyager premiered on December 8th, 2023 at Swarthmore College.
