Max Winig
(they/them)
I am a dancer, choreographer, and storyteller. My work explores the experience of being a person in the world with a central focus on joy. I am committed to leadership in the arts that centers the wellbeing of artists and prioritizes creating spaces where dance and dancers are highly valued.
I grew up just outside Boston, Massachusetts, where I spent my childhood crawling under bushes and taking dance classes at Joanne Langione Dance Center. I graduated from Swarthmore College in 2024, where I trained with Bethany Formica, Chandra Moss-Thorne, Pallabi Chakravorty, Kyle Clark, LaDeva Davis, Darrell Williams, and Pritika Agarwal (amongst others). Currently, I am an MFA student at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa studying choreography.
My recent work explores the way dance can be used to tell stories that can’t be conveyed in other mediums. I’m interested in human connection, interpersonal communication, and outer space. My choreographic projects have also involved other creative work, such as scriptwriting, audio editing, costume design, and video editing. As a choreographer and director, my central concern is creating a space where everyone feels safe and empowered to make art they care about.
Outside of dance, I work in stage management, lighting design, and general theater tech. Less relevantly, I’m a published linguist, one time tattoo designer, and whale enthusiast.
Max and their work have been described in many ways, such as:

“You’re the least intimidating person I’ve ever met” (anonymous)
